Well, this is a pretty complicated question since there has been a huge transition of TR3 over the years. They started out playing 80's progressive rock, then moved into jazz and world music, then slowly back into progressive rock. Around 1997 or so they started leaning towards hard rock. In 1998-1999 Tim toured with drummer Johnny Gilmore and Bassist Houston Ross (both from SOKO) as Puke Matrix... the latest name for the latest rendition of TR3. Tim sings and plays lead guitar and the music KICKS ASS!! Two albums were made duing this period, Puke Matrix Live (a live album) and Astral Projection (studio)
There are also a few good live recordings out there. I've got recodrings spanning through all of their genres so let me know if you want to check some of it out. To get an idea of just how kick ass it was, check out some of the photos on the photo page from the electric 99 tour.

The answer to your question is a veritable who's who of C-ville musicians. It is quite an incestuous bunch, in a good way. They all play together on each others projects. It is hard to say who is TR3. I would say the easiest way to answer that is TR3 is TIM and whoever is playing with him. People like Mike Sokolowski, Greg Howard, Robert Jospe, Houston Ross, Johnny Gilmore etc etc etc.

Very unique, he only has one vocal chord. The other was paralyzed in a van accident back in is younger touring daze. Because of the affliction he can do some really neat things with his voice. If he faces forward his voice is kinda scratchy, if he turns his head to one side his voice gets really scratchy and almost like a heavy metal voice. Then if he turns his head the other way, his voice is almost clear. Back in his high school and post high school days, he played bass and a sang. Mostly in disco cover bands. He always sang the falsetto parts. Obviously since the accident that ability has escaped him.

I'm really interested to hear the reworked TR3 songs, I know Fluffy said that TR was changing some guitar tunings to make the songs easier to sing. Hopefully that New Mexico show pops up on the FTP soon.

Unfortunately only the 1st set survived the recording process. Kyle got both on video though. Best bet, might be to get Kyle to burn you a video.

I doubt you will hear TIM singing on his acoustic stuff. He does not feel with his unusual voice that it is very complimentary of the acoustic guitar, but as we all know, TIM is certainly the one artist who is not afraid to surprise his audience. Guess we will just have to wait and see where his mood and music take him.

Both the live CD Live Puke Matrix and Astral Projection are great CD's. You may want to start with Sanctuary, his double disc. It has some acoustic, some electric, some with vocals, some instrumental. TR plays all the instruments on this record. It is definitely his most eclectic CD. A great place to start to see if you want to jump headfirst into the electric stuff. They are great but they are heavy. Surprises alot of people just how heavy. I sometimes compare it to Jimi Hendrix meets Nine Inch Nails or Ministy. LPM is live and subsequently has TR soloing a little longer on the songs, more guitar playing. Astral Projection is a well produced studio album. Both were recorded with Houston Ross on bass, and Johnny Gilmore on Drums. Probably one of the strongest lineups of TR3. Those CD's are great, but be warned, its not your typical dose of TR. ENJOY

Well, as for it being heavy that's cool. I have both Id and Petroglyph, so I have heard some of Tims heavier stuff. I think I'll check out the Puke Matrix CD.

For several years at the beginning, TR3 was TR, Robert Jospe, and Ron Pruitt (followed by Warren Richardson). That was THE band, IMO. In terms of "TR3." That was the band that fueled the crazy dance pyschedelic spirito-sexual trance scenes in Charlottesville and Harrisonburg. Utter craziness. The freshest, dopest-sounding band you ever heard. It was definitely the "we're all in on a little secret, it's only a matter of time before these guys are huge" thing. Of course, that didn't happen until DMB.

Rooted in reggae at first, then Warren Richardson brought the funk to the party. I hope Tim will release the first TR3 cassette someday on CD.

"Thought I had a couple of joints; thank God I've got my speakers."

Man, that was some good shit.

Do *you* have that cassette and are you willing to loan it out to somebody who can copy it to CD for the benefit of humanity? (It's not me, BTW, but I'm sure on of our TR Task Force members has the capability...)

Hey y'all, I need some help!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjSUR-bmAM0

I'm trying to identify the musicians in this video, and Waldo from nancies told me that "the dude on bass looks *really* familiar -- I think he was in TR3 at some point." I assume he mistook the guy's guitar for a bass, but I guess he's talking about the black guy singing toward the end of the clip. Anyone recognize him?

And while I'm at it, does anyone recognize the drummer in this video? Or the singer by her voice? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JiEzQl_eOE

All of the people in the above videos are C'ville musicians.

Any help would be appreciated!

If you are talking about the guy to the right of the sax player it's C-ville's own son, Joe Lawlor of X-Porn Stars who also works for DMB on the road. He sat in with DMB recently, I don't remember the date but here is a link to the thread where there is a pic of Joe jamming with Dave and the thread also talks about his playing with Chris Whitley as well as links to recordings of that event. ENJOY!! Hope this helps.

After CAREFULLY rereading your question I realized it is not Joe Lawlor you are looking for but the OTHER guitarist, that is Ezra Hamilton, also for C-ville and plays someTIMes in X-Porn Stars as well. Here is a link to his myspace page:

http://www.thehamiltonsband.net/

I think he also plays in a band called the Funk Daddys.
