Tim Reynolds trio awes George’s

Musical virtuoso Tim Reynolds and his band, TR3, graced George’s Majestic Lounge last night. The band is on tour in support of their newest release, Radiance.

Reynolds has played music all his life but made his name by frequently performing with Dave Matthews, in concert and on record, for the last 20 years. The musician has spent much of his career playing second fiddle to the Grammy Award-winning Matthews, which is surprising since Reynolds is ten years his elder and a more skilled guitarist.

TR3 is made up of Reynolds, bassist Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier. Last night the group roared through extended instrumental jams and strange between-song banter.

“Excuse me if I’m a little late,” Reynolds said, putting on pair of bat ears as he walked onstage.

Reynolds’ work on the guitar was phenomenal. The musician seemed to summon new speeds and styles as the set progressed.

George’s also hosted a local funk band, Groovement, last night, and I wandered past their set on a trip to the bathroom. The group was technically proficient, but never too proud about it, and the audience responded in smiles and foot taps.

Not so in the TR3 crowd, which mostly stood in awe. Virtuosity is intrinsically alienating and Reynolds’ waves of notes were far from hummable. But that’s not the point: it’s Reynolds’ skill and experience. Even the rhythm section knew it, pounding out tough guy blues riffs just like pros.
