Hey yall,

I almost forgot to mention this...I know it is a little last minute but November 21-23, protesters from all over the globe are converging on Fort Benning,Georgia(near Atlanta) to protest the continuance of the School of the Americas. This government sanctioned program has produced some of the worlds most notorious demons.

Here is some basic information about this program: [/black][/size=3]

[Background: The US Army School of Americas (SOA), based in Fort Benning, Georgia, trains Latin American soldiers in combat, counter-insurgency, and counter-narcotics. Graduates of the SOA are responsible for some of the worst human rights abuses in Latin America. Among the SOA's nearly 60,000 graduates are notorious dictators Manuel Noriega and Omar Torrijos of Panama, Leopoldo Galtieri and Roberto Viola of Argentina, Juan Velasco Alvarado of Peru, Guillermo Rodriguez of Ecuador, and Hugo Banzer Suarez of Bolivia. Lower-level SOA graduates have participated in human rights abuses that include the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero and the El Mozote Massacre of 900 civilians.

On January 17, 2001 the SOA was replaced by the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC). The result of a Department of Defense proposal included in the Defense Authorization Bill for Fiscal 2001, the name-change measure passed when the House of Representatives defeated a bi-partisan amendment to close the SOA and conduct a congressional investigation by a narrow ten vote margin. (See Talking Points, Critique of New School, Vote Roll Call.)

In a media interview, Georgia Senator and SOA supporter, the late Paul Coverdell, characterized the DOD proposal as "cosmetic" changes that would ensure that the SOA could continue its mission and operation. Critics of the SOA concur. The new military training school is the continuation of the SOA under a new name. It is a new name, but the same shame.]

I know of some caravans that are heading from Chicago, and we are forming a group here in Central Illinois. If you are interested in becoming involved, you can find out about other groups at this website:

And on Sunday, April 25, 2003, protesters will converge on Washington in protest to the threats to the reproductive rights of American women.

The changes are subtle but the implications are enormous. If you are in support of women's right to have autonomy and agency over what happens to their bodies, here is an extraordinary way to say it.

The timing is crucial for this protest. These congressional and judicial decisions that are being currently made will affect the our lives and that of future generations.

Come and be a part of history.

Caravans and low-cost transportation and lodging set ups are being arranged all over the country.

Basically his argument was that the cirriculum has not changed at all since he cold war, and the graduates to come from the SOA have committed some of the worst civil acts of murder in recent history. He also made the point that protesters have recieved jail time, while the actual graduates that have murdered civillians, mostly in latin countries, have not even faced trial.

Yeah, a co-worker of mine backed out of coming because a good friend of theirs has been in jail for the last three years from protesting SOA. But I know busload of shorties from Chicago that are going down to perform at the protest, so I hope that they stay safe.
