Today marks the 10th year anniversary of Frank Zappa's death.
I'm going to pay respect to this great guitar player.

(Yeah, I'm going to listen to all 40 of the albums I have of his.)

Thanks! I think I'll check out some live albums and move around from there.

Why I sure do.

The way I see it, there are 5 distinct eras of Zappadom:

The 60s, The Early 70s, The Late 70s, The 80s, The 90s

Obvious huh?

Well here are some recommendations for each:

The 60s:
Peak of the Freakhood. Counter-culture anti-hippie music.
I recommend:

Freak Out
We're Only In It For The Money*
Uncle Meat (of course)

The Early 70s:
More instrumental and jazzier and soulful and heavier.

Hot Rats*
Waka/Jawaka or Grand Wazoo
Roxy & Elsewhere*
One Size Fits all*

The Late 70's:
More hard rockish. More 'vocally'.

Sheik Yerbouti*
Joe's Garage
Zappa In New York

The 80's:
Faster. Rockin'. More crude/funny. Good times.

The Man From Utopia
Them or Us*
Jazz From Hell

The 90's:
More orchestral. More digital. More synclavier.

The Best Band You've Never Heard In Your Life*
The Yellow Shark
Civilization Phase III*
Make A Jazz Noise Here

If you wanna go the compilation route
I recommend any 'You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore' volume.

* denotes my personal favorites.

So it really depends on your flavor.

I always meant to listen to more Zappa, but never seemed to have the chance. Do you have any good albums to start out with Uncle Meat?
