Posted - 06/02/2005 : 9:33:02 PM Just wondering if anyone else from the Philly area is planning to go to hear this. I am, or at least I am planning on it now. Should be fun, Will Smith, DMB, Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Puff Daddy, Jay Z.
A great event for a worthy cause, poverty in Africa. Ok I know I will get people crying that there is poverty in USA (right near where this event will be held to name one place) but our country is worlds away from the poverty in Africa. Yes I know it exists other places too, but damnit, what is the problem with trying to focus on one area? Give me a break, yes there is poverty all over, at least they are trying to do something about it which is more than I can say about the complainers on this board. Just a word to anyone who is going to bitch about this forget it, don't even go there! To everyone else, your comments are welcome! |

Posted - 07/03/2005 : 2:29:13 PM OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!! Yes they did show a good 15 mins of them playing. When they tour, which is rumored to be, I will be there. damn I hope the tickets don't go for as much as the stones, could have had floor seats for $495 each to see the stones in Philly, no I am not that stupid, didn't get any.
The strangest thing for me was to see Pink Floyd on stage again. The guys are so old now....damn I am old now, but I remember and think of them as they were when I was in college. If what they sounded like was true, not dubbed in anyway, they were awesome! Best thing for me was experiencing it with my son who is a Pink Floyd fan too. Both of us were blown away by their sound quality, both instrumental and vocal. Sorry you missed it Arthen, but they will be running clips of this on AOL and MTV for a long time, at least I would think they would.
Funny because when I was the age most of you on this board are now, I never thought of being old and I sure as hell never thought the bands I went to see would be playing when they were old. Just never thought of that.
My parents hated the music I listened to and I assumed that my kids would hate the music I loved. Glad I was wrong about that. |

Oh, and one bit of irony. Tony Blair will head the big 8 this year and England was the country that fucked up more countries in Africa and around the world, than any other nation.
They definitely damaged the most countries but I say the most fucked up was the Congo under Belgian control, Leopold II was one crazy evil bastard.
I saw that MTV gave Pink Floyd only 15 minutes of airplay is that true? Or something like that. How was Pink Floyd I didn't get to catch it? |

While London definitely had the best line up IMO, this is one of the most wonderful events ever. I hope people who would otherwise not give a shit about people in Africa (and Africa has a long history of being shit upon)become aware of what is happening and try to do something to make a difference.
LRA if this means nothing to you, let me explain. It stands for Lords Resistance Army and is led by a man, James Kony. Supposedly he wants a nation ruled by the 10 Commandments, but this guy is a wako if there ever was one. His "army" has terrorized people in northern Uganda, and now is apparently back in Sudan. He is big on hacking people alive, and I know of at least one time he had an infant crushed to death with a large mortar and pestle used for grinding cava.
Let me tell you about one example of what this man promotes. Sylvia is a young woman. She had 4 children and a husband and lived off the land with her extended family and others in northern Uganda. When the LRA came, the government made people leave their homes and go into refugee camps. So Sylvia and her family took their 4 goats to a camp. Soon her goats were stolen. Thousands of people were crowed into this camp.
One day Sylvia realized she had no food for her children. She also knew the crop she planted at home would be ready for harvest, so Sylvia, her youngest child, husband and several neighbors decided to take the risk to go back to their home, gather food and return. (Humanitarian food drops provided only about a weeks worth of food and only came once a month or longer.)
Everything went well until they were about ready to leave. Suddenly they were surrounded by members of the LRA. They forced everyone but Sylvia to lay face down on the ground. Then the beat them to death one by one. Sylvia was forced to watch in horror. Then they made her remove her clothes and have sex with her dead husband. When she couldn't turn his body over they grabbed her and one of the boys cut off her right ear. The others mocked him that he didn't do it correctly, so he cut off her other ear, then her lips. She dared not cry out. She did however pass out and awoke in a hut. They came in and asked if she would ever come back to her home again and she said she wouldn't so they let her go. She walked naked and bleeding back to the camp where she collapsed. Someone from the camp saw her and people brought her back to safety. They had let her go so she would tell others not to try to do the same, not to try to return to their homes. Nice Christian, eh?
Another fact of this camp life was Night Migration.(this goes on every night all over the northern sub-Sahara regions) That is where all the children either run and hide in the jungle at night, not even telling their mothers where they will be or they go to the center of the village every night to avoid being captured my the LRA who made regular raids of these camps to force kids into being members of their army.
Africa has been a passion of mine for many years, Steven Biko, is one of my heroes. I am so glad the world is finally hearing their cries!
Sorry for the rant, but this cause is so close to my heart. |

Posted - 06/14/2005 : 07:42:12 AM Yah, fuck these people. Instead of having a show to raise money, why don't you fork over some of the millions of dollars you're rolling in for a change.
We all know everyone in DMB could shoot a million a piece into an effort like that. Will they? Shit no. Well, maybe after that last album...
It's a good idea in theory, just not enough star participation $$$...oh yeah, while I'm at it...FUCK YOU, PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES! |

oops. you just lost any claim to be able to complain about free speech being lost. i wasn't even going to say anything negative in earnest, but then i read this. for future reference: don't tell people, in a public forum no less, that basically "if you're going to say something i don't like, then don't say it. everyone who says what i want them to can talk." how about, you know, not premptively jumping up people's asses, and maybe dealing with what people say? |

Posted - 06/13/2005 : 2:58:46 PM It will take more than money to help Africa, but this is a good step in creating further awareness especially for our new generation coming on the scene. |

Posted - 06/02/2005 : 10:13:55 PM Bon Jovi had better watch his wallet around Jay-Z and P-Diddy...
All racist jokes aside though this should be a cool event, I though of you right away when I saw this posted on a DMB site Pam. Looks like a DVD or Documentary should come out of this event, which I will gladly contribute money to when it comes out.
What about the fest in PA that TR looks to be playing this summer? I noticed it on the tour dates page. You going to that Pam? |
