I just got back from seeing return to forever. Al Dimeola is horrible. Just so you know. He and chick traded a few times and well let's just say chick had well conceived musical ideas that he obviously heard and almost every time Al responded with complete finger wiggling BS. He couldn't keep a conversation going with chick at all. It was obvious too cause every time he tried he failed to keep and idea and develop it or even latch on to chick's, so he just returned to playing his shred patterns.

Other than that it was pretty good, but in my opinion the cost of the tickets vs music played was at a very unhealthy ratio. I've seen 10 times the music on a 1/10 the gear too.

I wish it were Bill Conners in the reunion...I've read accross the board(not just here), really bad reviews of the RTF tour...and no way am I willing to shell out the astronomical cost for the mostly scientological band.

BRING BACK BILL CONNERS, and you've got a deal!

shred and fast playing has it's place, but its place is not super-cerebral music like that. speed for the sake of speed is a dangerous toy to play with.

My old typing teacher told us of a guy who could type at 240 words per minute...

I'd pay to see that.
Zachmozach Posted - 06/12/2008 : 8:34:26 PM
Well ya typists go fast but usually typists write something to do with either what someone is saying or a transcript etc. That night the fast notes he was playing had nothing to do with the room he was standing in which to me he is bad. So I might want to see a typist instead of him.

typists go really fast without making mistakes, too. i'm not sure i'd pay to see it, though.

OK...let me semi-retract my statement. Obviously he's not "horrid" (as I had initially stated). He's a very highly skilled player...I'm just not a fan of his music, and thought I'd bash him a bit.

He is, however, a disgrace to the beard.

Well I've heard him on a few records and didn't think he was horrible. I was never a big fan I don't think, but his playing that night was just so unmusical. I don't think I would ever pay money to see him.

AHHHHHHHHHH what am I hearing???

Well I guess I'm in the minority here then that absolutely LOVES Al Di Meola. I've seen him twice live in the past two years, once electric, and once acoustic, and there was nothing horrible about it. I think his work of late has been breathtaking. Consequesce of Chaos, Speak a Volcano, Diabolic Inventions and Seduction for Solo Guitar, all beautiful.

I wanted to go see Return to Forever, they are playing a gig in LA at the Gibson Amputheatre, but tickets are like hundreds of dollars, and since I want to go to as many DMB shows this summer as possible, seeing RTF just ain't gonna happen I did however get their new anthology that came out last week.

By the way, a bit of music trivia for everyone: Al was the first ever musician to be signed to both a band contract, as well as a solo recording contract. Remember that one for Jeopardy.

Al DiMeola has always been terrible.

His only redeeming work was with Guitar Trio...but that was because he could stand on the shoulders of a true great like John McLaughlin.

Al DiMeoloa is horrid. And he's a disgrace to the beard.

It really wouldn't surprise me if he was deaf. Not at all. Especially with as loud as they play. No intensity... solution turn up the volume
Arthen Posted - 06/08/2008 : 12:29:42 AM
Isn't he deaf or something?

al dimeola relies too heavily on gadgets and speed.

sort of like my dear old grandma.
