Posted - 07/20/2008 : 10:16:54 PM He doesn't look like a composer to me and his virtuosity seems limited to how fast he plays. He'd be pretty good at musical olympics though. |

Posted - 07/19/2008 : 1:23:54 PM excellent point. i'd be interested to see how he does with something that requires more thought. i've heard him with burning in hell, and i gotta say, i'm not sure he could do a solo that's tasteful. |

I think Dream Theater is an awesome name! Hey, come on, I'm the Ranting THESPIAN, how can I not love it?
On to the topic: This guy's got skill, but I am not impressed. Give him Comfortably Numb, and see how he does with that. I have heard many people cover that song, and the guitar solos have never impressed me. On the other hand, I have heard Gilmour solo this song many times, and he always blows me away. |

Posted - 07/18/2008 : 11:07:37 PM metal bands have the most outlandish names, and that's not including shit from the frozen fucking nordlands, with their scandinavian shit. even the metal i like has ridiculous names.
metal names breakdown like this: you either have something brutal, something nordic, or something from a fantasy novel. let's take a look at my playist.
as far as brutal goes: bloodbath, corpus mortale, pleurisy. fantasy: blind guardian, dragonforce, demons & wizards, vale of pnath. nordic: actually, i don't have any nordic sounding bands, because i hate black metal. |

Posted - 07/18/2008 : 1:11:27 PM a guitarist is playing flight of the bumblebee to impress people? no way! not even that, he's playing an excerpt, i think.
let's ignore for a second that any asshole can play that and sound like he's good; the song is practically tailor made that way, with several 3 and 4 note patterns repeated frequently in what turns out to be different positions on a guitar.
the song is almost obviously he's very fast, that's fine. i like fast. his notes aren't clear at the faster tempos, though, and it sounds like he's adding slurs where there aren't supposed to be any. if you can't play it the way it's written, you can't play it, and i don't care how fast you can wiggle your fingers.
he also loses points for using a metronome during a performance. if you can't play the song at the tempo you want to play it at without a metronome, you can't play it. welcome to being a musician.
so what we have here is a guy who, with the aid of a metronome, played all the notes he was supposed to at the right time, sometimes slurring notes that aren't supposed to be slurred, while having no expression and apparently not even trying to figure out the phrasing of the piece. not impressed.
also, just in case, no one bother checking out his power metal band, burning in hell. they're derivative and boring, and they have no sense of melody (surprise.) you want good power metal, stick to bands like blind guardian, iced earth, kamelot, powerwolf or nighwish. hell, even dragonforce is better than them. |

Hmm....I don't know about the 320 bpm clip. Almost looks sped up. Look at the guy's movements who is standing behind him. If not, this may make me never look at a guitar again... |
