I know Kevin and Patrick are ok, but how is everyone else in California doing? I hope everyone is safe from the fires. I just can't imagine fires that huge.

Seems ironic, here in PA we have flash floods from all the rain we have been getting. Too bad there isn't a way to ship it all to California!

Sending positive vibes to all those affected by the fires, especially the firefighters, some of whom I hear haven't had a meal in 24 hours!

Being in Northern CA, it's pretty safe, but lots of my residents have homes and families that were evacuated. So there are a lot of guys and girls watching the news every night afraid that their houses will burn down next. It's pretty intense.

Living in Porter Ranch has become quite an experience...I am a seasoned veteran of fires in this area, but the recent fire to "blow" through here has to have been the worse. I don't know if it was because I was younger, but this fire scared me more than the previous 4 that we've had here since I've been living here (all my life...21 years).

Anyway, if you wanna see some pics that my friend down the street grabbed from the 27th, check out:

http://www.surfchaos.com/fire/

That's pretty much what I saw from my house as well, but he had his still camera, and I had my video camera. I'll have my video up on that site a little later this month (after I get done editing it down to a reasonable size). Please remember, that just on the other side of those houses were flames about 20-70 feet tall. Although they were about a mile or so away from us, it looked like they were 10 feet away.

I think it's terrible that people have to lose their homes in this manner but the fires are a natural event of the area and are an ecological necessity. Really curious about what GW Bush is going to do to further mangle forest health.

Luckily, no houses around me were even touched by the fire. Now, however, up in Stevenson Ranch (on the other side of the mountain), the flames actually came within 10 feet of homes. Fortunately, no one was injured up there, and no houses were lost. However, all the schools were closed, and part of the 5 freeway was closed as well (since the fire was literally across the street from the freeway). Now things are getting back to normal around here. The sun is out, and it's about 65 degrees outside. I haven't watched the news yet, but from what I last heard, they expect full containment of the Simi Fire by next week. Right now, I do believe it is 40% contained (which is a lot better than the 5% when those pics were taken!).

I'll keep everyone posted...

I called my sister to see how they were doing yesterday and I found out that they were on the verge of evacuation. Fires were 1 mile away from there house, they were packed and ready to abandon their home, and almost all of their possessions, but luckily the fire was contained before it reached their home. Apparently a few people have died, and lost their homes up in the mountain town where they live. Schools, and all city buildings are closed in the San Diego area, both because the air is too dangerous to breathe, and the workers have evacuated. Here in Irvine, there are no immediately near fires, but the air was very bad this past weekend. It looks like right now, the death toll is at 20, thousands of people have lost everything, and the dollar estimate for damage is 2 billion dollars. The good news is that today was been cloudy and much cooler temps, and there is a possibility of rain tomorrow, which would be greatly needed.

Good vibes to your sister Kevin. I hope her house doesn't get caught up in the mess.
