does he use his pinky while fingerpicking? i've tried but i have a hard enough time tryin to incorperate my third finger into playing... sry for the spelling errors
I'm fairly positive he never does. Occasionally he uses the pinky to brace his hand above the strings, but that's it. I know it can look like he's using it, but if you wiggle your first 3 fingers you should see your pinky wiggle too, try it.
If you're working on getting the third finger in practice, what I always used to do is hold a pencil upright on a table by pushing down on the top with your thumb, then spin the pencil with your 3 fingers. It was great in class, cause I didn't need a guitar with me. Give that a try.
it's also useful to pick a chord and arpeggiate it with all three fingers. you can do it while you're watching tv or whatever. i've noticed it's actually a lot easier if you don't plant your pinky anywhere.
I've tried that once in a while.. sometimes it's just convenient when you've got a base note and then four strings after to play the fourth with a pinky.. but I find it's too short to stay fluent, so generally I avoid it altogether.
