i bought a ps2 with a memory card, controller and warranty for 90 bucks. because nintendo doesn't have good rpgs. i've been playing champions of norrath with a friend. we beat it, and i want to get the sequel, but you can important characters from the first one. right now i have level 19 high elf cleric. my plan is level him up to around a 35 and tear ass through the second one, then play it at a harder level. has anyone played the second champions of norrath? if so, how good is it?

also, my girlfriend didn't beat me at mario kart, but it was really fucking close. i was actually terrified that she was that good.

yes, you can import characters from the first game to the second. it's actually one of the main features of the game (i think you can get to around level 80, if i remember correctly). if you liked the first game, you'll like the second even more, in an expansion pack sort of way. the game seems more balanced. but the two new classes don't differentiate themselves much from the 5 old ones. i mean, in dnd, what's the difference between a bezerker and a barbarian? they are one and the same. they also fixed some nasty glitches, like the game being super slow or crashing because they switched it from 2 dvds to 1 dual layer one without testing it. the story is still not the strong point of the game, and some of the planes are pretty homosexual. like the plane of gay. talking about this makes me want to play dark alliance 2. 'mancer style. but story was horrid compared to the first. come to think of it, why is kotr 2 very much the same as kotr? and why does a starwars game/movie have to have precedence for every single aspect? but back on subject, i will now play x men legends. it is a blatent rip off of dark alliance. but still pretty fun. there is a boss on there just like the red queen. but done horribly. but it's still fun because colosseus kicks ass.

hey dan,

if you want some serious rpg's, i'd definately recommend fallout 1 & 2. they're $6 together on amazon. you won't be able to put them down, and they're the kind of games that you'll bring out once a year to play through again. if you haven't played these, you're missing out big time.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004ZBSX/qid=1121199972/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_ur_1/002-1025554-6543269?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846

and if you want a really, really fun game, check out dungeon keeper 2 for $5. it's another one of those games that will never leave your desktop:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000K3DM/qid=1121200357/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_ur_1/002-1025554-6543269?v=glance&s=software&n=507846

and planescape torment for $3. i haven't actually played this game, but i've heard from friends, many people on the internet, and practically every employee for an online gaming site that this game has the best story in video game existence. yes, it is really that highly praised.

Fallout 1,2 and Tactics are three of my favorite games. I think I love Fallout as much as I do, because it's essentially at times Mad Max. And R. Lee Ermey does that one General's voice for Tactics.

Now you have reminded me about them and I'll have to buy them for a third time!

i know what you mean. there is always at least one fallout disc missing. it's like they're programmed to slip into some extra-dimentional space. but beware, tactics is now ultra expensive. damn demand.

i'm not into the futuristic rpg. dunno way. i haven't played the second dark allience game. i was the elf bitch magic user in it.

i really like the high elf cleric class. a great mix of terror train physical brutality (feel free to call me blaine) and magic. i guess what attracts me most to it is that a lot of his spells are strong against the undead. and like the cleric, i too despise the undead. i also have this weapon "baton of the peace keeper" and it's for a level 35 cleric only. how i need it.

Well, I just bought Fallout 1&2 for $12 after shipping. Not too bad.

It's all about Risk! Has to be my favorite board game. You really get to see the "Trueselves" of the people you play with, based on how they play.

the second dark alliance game could best be described as dark alliance ^10. that said, the characters are way cooler and much more diverse (dark elf woman monk, human woman cleric, moon elf necromancer, dwarf rogue, and human barbarian), have about two to three times as many feats and spells, the levels are way better, bigger, have many more secrets, and are much more diverse (not the same tiles used for every part of every act), there are way more levels, you get buffing spells, the gameplay is much smoother, TOTAL ITEM/WEAPON/ARMOR CUSTOMIZATION/CREATION (and the coolest names for the things you create), experience is split 50/50 and gold is pooled, so no more bitching about who killed the boss and took all the gold, the bosses are some of the most memorable and are just freakin' cool (seriously, probably 3 of my favourite 5 bosses in video game history are on dark alliance 2), the graphics are slightly better, and there's even an easter egg or two; another unlockable character besides drizzt (making 7 playable characters in all), and 'upgrade' quests specific to the character you picked; it's just some sweet, sweet candy.

the bad things are: the story absolutely sucks (but in my opinion is still better than either of the norrath games). you know how the first dark alliance was kind of a narrative: dark, and mysterious? that's all but gone. the story is just too cliche. there are some major glitches, such as: borador can't ransack when hasted, a certain boss can still take damage after it is dead, and make sure you don't summon anything (probably just don't cast magic) when you save, or the game might screw up.

but probably the most amazing part of the game was the dedication of the team that made it (and a very small team at that, might i add). they only had 9 months with very limited resources/number of people to make it (norrath took 2 years with about twice the team), they spent 14 months alltogether when you add in the overtime they put in. little to nothing from the last game was reused in the one. it even feels brand new, outside of the usual quests and monsters, and the gameplay being almost the same, slightly tweaked. even with all the overtime, the team still found time to take suggestions, hear concerns, and talk with fans about the game in their few spare moments, several days a week (which is what i think kept them going, really). seriously, they could've just reused the last game and made some minor changes like a certain game i won't mention, but they went the whole 9 yards on it, even though it meant 17+ hour work days/ with NO DAYS OFF in the last 4.5 months of its production. they really left a legacy with this game. (and it showed with how quick other companies sucked those employees up just after its completion, right before blackisle's/interplay's demise).

it is worth the time and the money. just do it. do it. doit.

the new zelda will be a thing of glory, and this is good, because it will likely be my last nintendo game. i'm switching to playstation 2, and once the price goes down like a billion dollars a couple years from now, the ps3. i have had enough of nintendo's bullshit. they're just not in touch with reality anymore. they say things that simply could not be farther from the truth in regards to games and the market. i believe i read a quote on gamespot from their president or some such person of importance that read: "gamers don't want online play." i forget it exactly, but he actually said people didn't want to play games online. and look at the shit they're making. everytime a movie comes out, nintendo is there to make an awful game of it. they've ruined most of their staple games. mario sunshine? donkey konga? luigi's mansion? way to fuck up sure fire franchises. i can do with innovation, but give me a break. they simply refuse to make good games.

nintendo is trying to make you feel like if you don't buy their shit, you're selling out your gaming past. here's the thing: fuck your gaming past. nintendo doesn't know what they're doing anymore.

Ironicly all those games I'm playing are a generation before me (started in N64/PS1 for consoles)

I'm still not sure if the whole console online gamming is all the way down like the PC is, maybe the next gen they will be better, but why wouldn't you wanna play online =\

Ah! On the GBA!? Quit it Mechman you are making me feel older than I should!

A Link to the Past was the best Zelda game. I didn't play Majora's Mask or any other games that have come out after it though.

i've been controller-slinging for around 13 years now. n64 doesn't feel old to me, not the way snes and nes do. when nes came out my father got it for himself and my mother. my father was a controller-slinger of some skill, but my mother was awesome. she beat the first zelda when it came out, in addition to mike tyson's punch out and some others. i was too young to fully get into it, but as time drew on i came into my own.

majora's mask wasn't as good as ocarina of time, but it was still really really good. know it's a zelda game because you feel like shooting yourself in mouth when playing the water temple. there's all manner of interesting side stories, the combat is good, the challenge is good, the graphics are good enough. the shape shifting with masks to complete certain things or do certain temples is also a nice touch. i would definately play it, were i you. and wind waker is a very easy game, but it's definately not bad. i like that one, too. and the graphics are incredible. not realistic obviously, but "good" doesn't mean "realistic." the movements are very fluid. water, link, wind through the grass. all very well done. and the facial expressions are remarkable, too. the game's one big flaw is it's too goddamned easy. there are side quests, not stories per se, but quests. they're alright. no big thing.

heh I only got my GBA a month-ish ago.

Would have bought Majora's Mask for the N64 if it didn't have to use the expantion pak, but I'm getting the collectors edition soon and it has it on there, with Ocarina of time, legend of zelda, and adventure of link.

I actually like the Windwaker and it's art style (yeah I'm weird) execpt your right dan it is too short, same with The Minish Cap (only had 5-6 duengons) but it was fun.

PS1

Final Fantasy VII (perhaps the best RPG ever)
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Breath of Fire III

PS2

Final Fantasy X (not as good a storyline as the older ones, but still fun)
Xenosaga Ep 1 (this one kicks ass!)
Xenosaga Ep 2
Kingdom Hearts (more on the childish side, but I enjoyed it)

As for Civ III, I go through waves of hopeless addiction and complete boredom. But man oh man, I love it when I find a bunch of villages at the beginning and get around 10 advances in a row. I like to see the earlier I can get Saltpeter...from what I remember, I got it in 670 AD. I know I got it earlier once, but I can't remember the year.

Has anyone ever played Stronghold or Stronghold 2 for PC? The original is one of my favorites, but 2 has way too many bugs right now to be enjoyable.

Controller-slinger. Fantastic. I just finished rereading everything from The Gunslinger to Wizard and Glass. Did you know he completely revised The Gunslinger, I had no idea. So now I have to go and read that version.

Stronghold is great! It's one of my favorite castle sims, there's enough building realism, without having to spend all the time waiting for it to be built. You only have to get the supplies and then it's instantaneous. With games like Tropico you have to wait for it to be built.

There are already 2 patches out....and they are trying to get a third out. The game is still in need of a lot of tweaking, even after 2 patches. There's a lot of crashing and compatibility problems.

The ending left a real bad taste in my mouth at first, but now I come to think of it in terms that Roland himself is the tower. Everything else does rule, although I was hoping for more tie-ins to other books. I have half a mind to buy the book that makes all the connections to his other books. Rereading The Stand right now, and it puts a whole new perspective on Randall Flagg/The Walkin' Dude. I used to think of him as a devil, but now with the repeated red eye image/Crimson King, I think of it as one struggle for the tower on a different level.

Sandalwood grips would be great. You'll need a docker's clutch too.

nah. two holsters, slung low at the hips, say thankya.

spoilers avast.

that fucker flagg was everyone. walter o'dim, marten broadclock, richard fannin, walter padick, john farson, randall flagg. i was expecting the goddamned billy-bumbler to be flagg as well.

here's what i don't get. jake chambers died in keystone earth. done is done and there will be no taking back, say sorry. i was also under the impression that eddie dean died in keystone end-world. if so, how can the two still be alive in non-keystone earth? when you died in keystone earth, didn't that mean that that was it? that you are dead in all worlds?

also, why does roland begin again in the desert? that's not really starting over. after all, the slaughter at tull had already taken place, as had his thing with susan delgado. as had jericho hill (he had the horn this time, which king says implies the possibility of redmption) ka is wheel, but roland doesn't restart at birth. he restarts when many have already died for his cause. it just doesn't make any sense. i don't see how roland being the tower comes into play. i'd like to hear your explaination for it.

also, why does roland begin again in the desert? that's not really starting over. after all, the slaughter at tull had already taken place, as had his thing with susan delgado. as had jericho hill (he had the horn this time, which king says implies the possibility of redmption) ka is wheel, but roland doesn't restart at birth. he restarts when many have already died for his cause. it just doesn't make any sense. i don't see how roland being the tower comes into play. i'd like to hear your explaination for it.

I'll address your points in reverse:

The desert beginning, that was the start of King writing him into existence! As far as I interpret it, that's the beginning of the wheel because it's where King started everything. Sure there are years of history behind Roland, and other beginnings, but they are the true start. That's why he, Sai King, is so important, almost as important as Roland and the Tower/Rose.

From thedarktower.net:
quote:
The first important addition in the revised edition is the start of the third paragraph. King adds a few sentences describing a feeling of dizziness that washes over Roland. This particular sensation "made the entire world" appear thin, as if you could see through one world to another. This is similar to how Eddie and Jake describe their first trip to todash New York , and might also provide a clue to the ending of the series.

In terms of Jake Chambers and Eddie Dean still living, I have a couple of ideas. Number one, perhaps the two (well three, right, weren't they with a dog which was Oy?) in that world that Suze enters, aren't the exact two who died. When Jake died the first time in his own When/Where he remembered it. When he died in Roland's world he remembered it. The two in that final world don't seem to have any recollection of ever existing.

Another thought, is that it could simply be a reward for following the path of the Beam and helping to save the Dark Tower. A sort of Heaven, and in a similar world you may find Alain or Cuthbert, and in another world you may run across Nick Andros who can finally speak, hanging out with Ralph and Larry and Glen from the Stand.

Finally, it could be that Stephen King couldn't leave them dead, and was so sentimental he had to produce a world where Suze would get to meet up with them again and live happily ever after.

Speaking of Flagg, your Oy comment made me laugh out loud literally, I didn't think that he was John Farson, but that he was controlling The Good Man. What do you think Flagg is? And for that matter who is the Crimson King? I'm sure if I bought one of the companion books I'd find the answer, but I was wondering if you had any thoughts/knowledge. And if you know, where/what book is the artist guy from?

i've never read any other stephan king book, but it says flagg was once walter padick or some name in his humble beginnings, before getting mixed up with the crimson king. so i don't think he's a devil or demon, but some manner of powerful sorcerer or whatever, and that his part in the stand is just more service to the crimson king. bringing ruin to a level of the tower. i also think that he was john farson, because didn't sayre say to roland something about how he knew him because his recognized his mother's mouth "which did suck off john farson with such glee." marten broadcloak, i believe, was flagg, and rolands mom did cheat on steven deschain with marten. so assuming sayre was not lying, farson=marten=walter=flagg. who i guess was also legion, maerlyn, the ageless stranger. and from thedarktower.net: "Unknown to Steven, Marten is also John Farson, the enemy of Gilead and the Affiliation. Adding to the list, he is also Walter, the man in black that Roland chases across the desert."

as for king writing him into existence. true that he did, starting from the desert, but king is still governed by ka, as are all things, do ya not kennit. he didn't write roland. ka did. you'll note that roland remembers susan before king writes that history into existance. he remembers her very well.

in regards to jake and eddie, i think i understand better now. eddie dean as we know him is not "keystone eddie" nor is jake chambers keystone jake. because they are not from keystone earth. king, on the other hand, is keystone king because he is from keystone earth, which is why they need to save him so badly. i think it matters what the when and where you originate from is, not the when and where you die in. as you recall eddie is surprised to learn about the "real" co-op city, implying this his when and where aren't keystone. so i suppose that if they died in keystone end-world and keystone america, they'd still exist in keystone america and other non-keystone americas.

although in defense of the starting over ending, remember flagg telling the gunslinger's fortune with the card. he says something about roland "resuming his quest." roland says he never stopped. also, flagg places the tower card completely over the hanged man card, the hanged man being roland.

I need to reread the last three books, and read the revised Gunslinger.

And I remembered that Patrick, the artist, is from Insomnia. You should consider reading Hearts in Atlantis and Insomnia, perhaps a few stories from the Everything's Eventual collection, as they relate very directly to the tower. When I sit and think about the connections and all the characters and books, I get overwhelmed. The whole Tower universe is so immense.

Apparently there is some reference in Book 6 or 7 about how the Crimson King is also of the Lind of Eld. That just makes the whole thing more confusing. I'm still not sure who/what the Crimson King is. And at first I was kind of dissapointed with how the ol' Crimson King was "erased from the picture" pardon the pun, until I remember the struggle the main character of Insomnia, who directly battles the agents of the Crimson King to protect the boy who eventually grows up to be the Artist.

I think your reasoning with the Keystone Eddie and Jake makes a lot of sense.

I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying our palaver very much.

And another question, do you think we'll see more writings and stories from Stephen King about Roland and his life? I certainly hope so.

Glad to hear it. I just finished it today. I think it's his best stand alone novel, personally. The sheer depth of character he instills in so many of the players is nothing short of amazing. Especially when considering he wrote it so early on in his career. Let me know how you like it.
