I don't think I've brought this up before, or anyone else for that matter, anyways...

Anyone else play the Ukulele? I was in Hawaii with my parents two years ago, and I bought a mid model Hilo Ukulele. Pretty simple to play, and fun. I generally sit around and sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" in the same manner as Israel.

I've played them enough, but I don't own one. They are fun to play with. It took me a little while to figure out the different voicings and I found it hard to play melodically because the strings aren't set up lowest in pitch to highest in some sort of easy interval, but I guess with a little more time it would come along.

If you're into the uke check out Jake Shimbukuru. He is like a god in hawaii. Here are some clips.

That should blow your mind.

Oh yeah! Jake's a marvel! I remember seeing him on PBS a few years ago when he was only nineteen and he was amazing to say the least. He was on a few tracks on the last Flecktone's release Little Worlds.

And I know what you mean about the end strings both having high pitches. It makes scales interesting, I'm sure there's some book I could buy, but I just like playing around on it. Plus, I'm huge (6'4"/270) and I play this little instrument, it catches people's attention.

Ya he actually went on tour with the Flecktones last summer as a special guest for a few dates, including telluride I believe. Him and Pamelia Kurstin the theremin player. He's also guested with Vic's band a few times. That's what I want to hear, the Uke playing some funk. I still need to pick up a cd of his. Has anyone checked any of them out?

I love Pamela's work with the theremin on Little Worlds and would love to hear her own stuff. I've got random tracks of Jake's own stuff, and my dad has his albums. From what I've heard he does a mix of solo acoustic Uke songs, and then songs with a band backing him.

Ya hearing a live show with the flecktones and hearing her walk basslines on a theremin was incredible. I didn't think it was possible, but she did it pretty well. Well I'll have to grab Jake's CD when I get the chance. I'm wondering how good the rest of his band is or if it's just basically back up for jake.

I only know one song on the Ukulele, and it's one of Jake's songs interestingly enough. But I can't remember the name for the like of me....something about waves maybe.

Unfortunately with Hawaiian music that doesn't narrow it down! Everything's about trees, the ocean, volcanoes, beaches, etc.
