Well after having an avid intense interest in amazing musicians, specifically guitar players for years and years, I finally bought an acoustic guitar. I have always had an interest from a listeners standpoint and had no desire to actually play one myself. One of my closest friends has played for 25+ years and our conversations are often about guitars, guitar construction, music theory, and music in general. He has been trying to convince me for years that I need to play one because I have such an interest. I always tell him, I don’t need to play myself with people like TR, John Scofield, John Mclaughlin, etc(A huge list). I’d much rather sit back and enjoy and admire the beautiful variety of music and guitars. As I’ve said before I’m more of a visual artist and have often thought designing and doing the inlay on acoustic guitars would be a great thing to do. Designing something like the Gibson Hummingbird or the $50,000 Martin I saw at a guitar show with inlay all over it, back and sides. So anyway, my friend and I are hanging out one night. He picked up the Burlington paper and said "I usually read this at work but I didn’t have TIMe today. I like to check the musical instrument section of the classifieds". So I’m out on the porch having a smoke and he yells out and comes bursting thru the door. "There’s an acoustic Giannini in here. It’s a classical (we had decided a long TIMe ago, if I were to ever get a guitar I should start off with a nylon string to keep my delicate tender little fingers from getting raw and shredded on a steel string and discouraging me too much). It sounds perfect for you"(and he never lets up about me playing). So I respond, call the number and ask about it. Thinking it would be gone already as guitars never stay in the paper for long. Next thing I know we are on our way to a little town outside of Burlington at 9pm at night. The woman who owned the guitar was on her way out of town and it was her last night in Vermont. She said if we wanted it we had to get it that night. It’s a classical, pretty old (1962) and in good shape. It’s kinda cool too because my friends first guitar a long time ago was a Giannini. Apparently they never really made a great quality guitar, but it was cheap, it sounds great, the neck is straight and it has really good action and rather than spend a lot of money on one before I know if I’m really going to pick it up and learn, I decided to try this one. It needed new strings of course so we picked those up the next day. My friend put one string on while I watched and he made me do the rest. Same thing with tuning it. He showed me once and made me do it after that. It took 3 days for the nylon strings to stretch so I had lots of practice tuning it. With an electronic tuner of course, but I played around with it so much I can do it by ear now. This may seem like romper room stuff to most of you but it was a major accomplishment for me. I have zero musical background except for listening to albums and CD's and seeing lots of concerts. I only know about 8-10 chords so far and I certainly cannot change chord positions easily. In fact not at all. Anyone know any one chord songs? I used to make fun of 3 chord songs now they confuse me..HaHa!I thought I had an advantage because my fingers are so small but that isn’t necessarily true. Then I go and listen to Tim, Django, Jimmy Rosenburg, John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, Frank Zappa, etc. and get wholeheartedly discouraged because they are so damn good. I remember seeing TR and being mesmerized by his fingering for hours as I’m sure you all know about. TR has been a big influence in all this because he doesn’t have boundaries, experiments with sounds and expands the musical mind. I love the story about him trying to imitate a seagull with his guitar. Anyway, that’s my new guitar story. Thought some of the musicians and musician affiliates on the board would get a kick out of it and bring you back to when you first started. I didn’t exactly learn Stream in a few days like one of the other stories (which is so impressive by the way), then again I never thought I’d be able to tune one by ear either. Also, the main point of the story was to get some info, tips, and exercises from people on the board. Email me with any of that stuff if anyone has the TIMe.

Whatever you do, don't listen to Segovia..
Glad you got a guitar, and glad it's a classical. Those have been ringing my ear lately, and if I find one cheap and good, I might pick it up... I don't know why, however, because I never practice and hardly play any songs...but I like it.
Anyway, congrats on getting the guitar and liking it, hope it works out for you and you can do with it what you want. (I hesitate to say "I hope you get good on it, because maybe you just want to have fun.) So have fun.

Ummm... One chord song. How bout' Don't drink the Water. It's one chord for the verse and two for the chorus. It's the rythym you might have trouble with though. |

Evergreen asked:quote: Anyone know any one chord songs?
Actually, I do know one. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name and I don't have my CD's at my disposal to check. It is a song by Shudder To Think. Me and my friends have always marveled at the simplicity of the song. It is actually interesting while only being one chord over and over.
Glad to hear you finally gave into the urge to acquire a guitar. I don't think you were around when I posted that I bought a guitar on the last TR tour. Of course, I have not progress nearly as far as you in a much longer TIMe. Although, Rew made some wonderful noises on it one nite, drunk at my house. I just love banging around on it and making sounds. It is alot of fun. I know your excitement and frustration. I am sure, with TIMe, you will get better and better. Keep working on it. How does Althea feel about it? Cats are notoriously selfish and don't like things that take your attention away from them. Cat thinks: "Stop strumming that and PET ME!!!" Good luck, I am sure with all the wonderful influences, you will excell!! |

Is this deja vu???? I feel like I read this post before, only you went on to give the names of the cats. Maybe I have just been on Fluffy's cat post too long, hehehehe. |
