Anyone know of a good/decent, cheaper recording software to use to cut a simple 4 song demo on my home PC? I've been thinking of this for a while and am interested in purchasing something. My biggest concern, besides not breaking the bank, is how I would hook my guitar, mic, etc... to my computer for recording. Can anyone give me any tips on this?

Thanks,

Adam

What i would suggest, though it is a bit pricey. Is to get a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum ZS card.

Its 200 bucks, BUT... it is a kick as sound card, you get a front computer panel interface, 1/4 inch input, headphone jack, midi inputs, rca cable ect...ect...ect...

here is a tour of the Audigy 2

http://www.soundblaster.com/products/audigy2_platinum_ex/tour.asp

I have just a normal Audigy Platinum EX (not audigy 2) and i love it. Use it all the time.

That might be a bit cheeper because it is an older model, but i can not find a price at the moment

Thats the normal audigy that i have.

So...thats what i suggest. might cost a bit more, but its well worth it. Otherwise you can just get a converter and run your instrament cable into the mic in on yoru sound card, but the quality will probably suffer.

Thanks. I'm not looking for totally cheapo stuff, I'm just not looking to spend like 1000 dollars for software and all of the stuff to hook my equipment up to my computer. That Audigy looks good.

How is the quality of the recordings produced with Audacity?

Whenever I record stuff I always use my Extigy (external version of the Audigy) and Cakewalk Sonar.

Sonar ain't cheap though.

Audacity is a cool program for being free. It has all the features that merit the premium cost of commercial audio editing applications. The quality will be the same as any computer recording program, it's all determined by the quality of your soundcard, which in the case of the Audigy, is great.

So the Audigy is a sound card, and a drive that you install in the computer that you can plug directly into? And when you say the Extigy is external, it is also a sound card, but an external unit for plugging into?

You'll have to forgive me for knowing nearly nothing to me. My only recording unit has been an old Tascam 4 track for about 10 years.

I use cakewalk. It works. It was free.

yea, the extigy is a unit that sits on your desk, and it has a 1/4 inch jack on it.

I had this as well for a while, but it runs through the usb so it slowed my comp waaaay down.

and i like the front panel better.
but thats just me.

i've used much more expensive recording programs, and i still think audition is better than most of them, and by far one of the best for the price. you speak the truth.

Digidesign mBox - $440

Includes 2-channel interface (USB) and Pro Tools LE 6.2 (which you can upgrade to 6.4 for free online).

I don't think it gets better than that.
