Reasons why Dragonlance could be a great success as a film if it was done right:

1. A trilogy beginning with the Chronicles would be easier to follow for those people who haven't read the books. Unlike LOTR the characters are easier to follow. So is the plot (I always hear people complain that LOTR is too complicated and hard to follow. I always remark that they should read the books or go watch Harry Potter).

2. Dragonlance has it all: Elves, Humans, Orges, Goblins, Griffins, Unicorns, Wizards, Knights, Kender (which in my opinion are much more interesting than Hobbits), and best of all dragons.

3. The Companions would be rather easy to cast. In my honest opinion only two characters really need to really be looked over: Raistlin Majere and Tasselhoff Burfoot. Everyone else wouldn't be too difficult for talented actors/actresses to act out. I seriously can't imagine anyone acting like Tas and really pulling it off.

4. While LOTR is a great trilogy and wonderful writing, let's face it folks; the storyline moves a lot slower in the books than portrayed on film. That's why a lot of die hard Tolkien fans rag on the movies. Dragonlance is fast paced and there's more action in Dragons of Autumn Twilight than in all three of LOTR. There are lots of wonderful, exciting fight scenes. My favorite is when the Companions fight the mechanical dragon.

5. Not only is there plenty of action, there's great humour as well. When the Companions meet the Gully Drawves is a terrific scene. Fizban would be particulary fun.

6. Let's not forget about romance. Of course, there's Tanis and Laurana and Caramon and Tika. Goldmoon and Riverwind.

7. The Dragons. What can I say? There is something that LOTR lacks. I'm a hard core Tolkien fan, but I just love all the Dragons. We really wouldn't see a whole lot of Dragons until Spring Dawning, but we get a glimpse of them in the other two books.

I hear rumours of a movie getting started, but I don't know if it's true or not. Hopefully it is. I just can't picture anyone being a great Raistlin. Any ideas?

i started a thread on this a while ago. i fucking love dragonlance almost as much as lotr. i really want to see this done. although i enjoy the twins trilogy since it revolves around raistlin majere, otherwise known as "the goddamn man." he's probably my favorite character in any book, aside from feanor. the chronicles would be fine, too. casting would be a real bitch, though.

I seriously hope it was just a bad phrasing on your part, otherwise I took your comments to mean that lots of action in a short period of time make for a better book in relation to LOtR. Maybe you just meant for the movies, but I'm not sure.

If that's the case...well, if one's attention span needs to be fed like that, I don't think reading is the appropriate hobby.

i believe he meant for people in general, and not himself. i didn't read one thing in that post about the author's personal taste. lot's of references to "people" and "die hard tolkien fans" though.

Oh, okay. Well, my comment about attention spans and reading still applies to the general populace.

it does indeed. either way, dragonlance is fantastic and everyone would like it. it's based on d&d, but there's no way it could suck as much as the movie did.
