The middle school I work in received a grant to provide that provides fruits and veggies to the students. The home economics depts comes around on certain days and gives the classrooms containers of a particular fruit or veggie of the week. The idea is to get the kids to try foods they may otherwise never taste and hopefully get them to incorporate some into their diets, for a healthier life style.
Well, today's veggie was "Majesty" Potatoes which are PURPLE!!! Yep, purple potatoes! I never saw them in the store but apparently they are resistant to the potato blite and therefore can be easily grown organically. (but I wonder if they are genetically altered?)
Maybe you know Robin, I know you are into natural foods. I never heard of them before today.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I love potatoes and purple is my favorite color... perfect.  I wonder if they turn slightly magenta when you add butter?  |

man, i was offered purple potatoes once. i told them to get that the fuck away from me. i didn't know they made them til i saw them.

I've grown them before because like you said they resist disease. They're considered an heirloom variety, kind of an original potato. They are really a beautiful shade of purple, and have a very nice flavor. The skins get darker if you make them into fries but lose some color when mashed. They do make beautiful chips. And you keep the skins on which you can do cuz they're organic. I like them because like other heirloom varities, they tend to be stronger and have better flavor from not being hybridized. seriously, though, if you hand me a new food and it's purple, fine. but potatoes? man, those aren't supposed to be purple. or at least i should have gotten some sort of notice ahead of time. like "hey dan, try these new purple potatoes." i didn't get that, though. they just sort of snuck it up on me. |

| LOL! Oh Dan....Yes teri, the skins are purple and the inside is kind of striped and varigated purple. When I lived in a communal house hold we grew them in the huge garden we had. I made scalloped potatoes and we all thought they looked kind of psychedelic.Then it became the weekly fave on the kitchen request board. Yep, psychedelic potatoes...very nice to look at too. LOL, actually I am the same way, I didn't try them because the color and the fact that they were raw, really turned me off. I also won't eat blue corn chips, lol. I know its stupid to be that way, but I can't get past it. Same with green ketchup. And no, I wouldn't eat green eggs and ham. |
