Just today I was fooling on a riff, then added to the riff, then changed the rhythm slightly. Then I see the Bourne Ultimatum, and think about soldiers, and I sit at the computer for 5 minutes, and the song is done.
It is so mysterious how some songs just pop out. I wasn't trying to do anything other than play and fool around on the guitar. It just poured out of me. Music seems so completely different than any other art form. Somehow it creates itself. I'll post a recording of the song tomorrow.
Does anyone else experience this with writing songs? I heard Instant Karma was written and recorded all in one day.
Gotta love music. |

If I have something REALLLY special, I never seem to finish it, usually fingerpicking songs, because I subconsciously probably never want to "finish" it. As far as regular songs with lyrics and craxy arrangements it usually just comes out. Music starts with a riff, and the lyrics, a subject. Usually I will stay up all night and write 12 songs, 4 of which are good. Sometimes, I can't write a damned thing. Inspiration is a funny thing. I was asked to write a song for the film, "American Drug War: The Last White Hope" so I watched the movie, and wrote the song in 5 minutes. Some of it I had floating in my head already, but after watching the film(which is great by the way) it just poured out. After telling the filmaker this, I think it made them appreciate it more, since it WAS directly influenced by the film.
Anywho....off to San Diego! |

I think that some of the best songs I have written all came out at once, music and lyrics and were completed in 5 minutes or so with very few revisions afterwards. Then, like Cahill said, I have others that I will probably never finish. |

Probably my best song I ever wrote has a long story beginning with I Did It . . . yes I Did It. When it was released as a single, I thought it was ok. I learned how to play it and found it enjoying to play. So I was inspired to write a hard raunchy rock song. I did, but most of my songs tend to come in twos. So there was this other more upbeat acoustic song. Yet it never seemed to work. So then I went through a process of slowing it way down, threw in an odd chord, and added an uplifting and powerful outro. Then the lyrics became about a woman who was abused by her husband. It sounds nothing like I Did It, nor is it similar in how it is played on the guitar.
Weird how some songs come about. |

No, I don't have a myspace page. However, I got a site that is dedicated to people posting their own music. I am doing a serious 9 track demo recording that will be posted up there. Some are just acoustic and vocals, sometimes multiple guitars, sometimes with electric. Half of it is done, and the other half will be done within 2 weeks since I got my new guitar. I also need to wait now to get my les paul back from the shop. I needed adjustments on it. |
